Pasture, Rangeland and Forage
What is Pasture, Rangeland, and Forage (PRF) coverage?
PRF is a federally reinsured risk management solution offered by AgriSompo, designed specifically for farmers and ranchers who depend on pasture, rangeland, or forage for grazing and haying.
It provides financial protection when rainfall levels drop significantly within your geographic area, helping you manage the impact of dry conditions on your operation.
Why should I consider PRF coverage?
PRF is designed to help offset the financial strain caused by reduced forage production. When rainfall is insufficient, producers often face higher costs from:
- Purchasing additional feed
- Destocking or reducing herd size
- Depopulating livestock
- Adjusting operational practices
This coverage helps protect your operation from those added expenses by providing support when rainfall is below expected levels.
How does PRF work?
PRF coverage is based on a rainfall index rather than individual farm production. Here’s how it works:
- Your insured acreage is assigned to a geographic grid
- Rainfall within that grid is tracked and compared to historical averages
- If rainfall falls below your selected trigger level, you may receive an indemnity payment
This standardized, data-driven approach ensures consistent and objective measurement across all insured producers.
What types of land and producers are eligible?
PRF coverage applies to:
- Grazing land
- Hayland, including certified organic and transitional organic hay
It is available for:
- Landowners
- Tenants
- Owner/operators
This flexibility allows a wide range of agricultural operations to benefit from coverage.
What coverage options can I choose?
PRF allows you to customize your policy based on your operation’s needs, including:
- Coverage levels ranging from 70% to 90%
- Index intervals, which are two-month periods when rainfall is most critical to your production
- Productivity factor, which adjusts the value of your coverage
- Acreage and land use selections
You must select at least two index intervals, ensuring your policy aligns with your most important growing periods.
What is the rainfall index?
The Rainfall Index measures precipitation using data from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center across grid areas.
Key features include:
- Grids measuring approximately 0.25° latitude by 0.25° longitude
- Comparisons of actual rainfall to historical averages
- Coverage triggered by lack of rainfall within your selected grid and time periods
Importantly, PRF does not measure individual farm rainfall or production—it insures against deviations in regional rainfall patterns.
When and where is PRF available?
PRF is available across the 48 contiguous United States, with limited exceptions for grids that cross international borders.
The sales closing date for PRF is December 1. Timely enrollment is essential to securing coverage for the upcoming insurance year.
What decisions do I need to make when enrolling?
When setting up your PRF policy, you will need to determine:
- Coverage level
- Index intervals
- Productivity factor
- Acreage
- Practice type (such as irrigated or non-irrigated)
These decisions allow you to tailor coverage to your specific operational risks.
