What is Livestock Risk Protection (LRP)?

Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) is an insurance solution designed to protect cattle producers against declining national market prices. It gives you the confidence to plan ahead by helping safeguard your revenue in uncertain markets.

How does LRP coverage work?

With LRP, you select a coverage price—ranging from 75% to 100% of the expected ending value. If market prices fall below your selected coverage level at the end of the insurance period, you may receive an indemnity payment to help offset the difference.

What types of cattle are eligible for coverage?

LRP covers two main categories of cattle:

  • Feeder Cattle – including unborn types and cattle weighing 1,000 pounds or less
  • Fed Cattle – with weight ranges between 1,000 and 1,600 pounds

How do I purchase an LRP policy?

LRP coverage is purchased through a livestock insurance agent. While you can submit an application at any time, coverage begins only after a Specific Coverage Endorsement (SCE) is selected, approved, and purchased.

When does coverage begin and how is premium billed?

Coverage starts the day your SCE is approved. Premium billing occurs on the first day of the month following the end date of the coverage period, giving you flexibility in managing your cash flow.

How much coverage can I purchase?

Once your application is approved, you can insure up to:

  • 12,000 head per Specific Coverage Endorsement (SCE)
  • 25,000 head per crop year

Is LRP available in my area?

Yes. LRP coverage is available nationwide, in all states and counties, making it accessible to producers wherever they operate.

Are there premium subsidies available?

Yes. LRP includes premium subsidies ranging from 35% to 55%, depending on the coverage level you select—helping reduce your overall cost.

Why should I consider LRP for my operation?

With flexible coverage options, nationwide availability, and built-in premium subsidies, LRP helps you proactively manage market risk—so you can focus on growing your operation with greater confidence.
