By Christa Luebke, Vice President of Underwriting
Underwriting touches nearly every part of AgriSompo’s business. Each day, underwriters work with agents and internal teams to help policies move accurately through the process while applying strong judgment in a complex and constantly changing crop insurance environment.
Supporting agents throughout the policy process
Much of an underwriter’s day is spent helping agents navigate policy questions, documentation and AgriNet processes. Some issues are straightforward while others require research, discussion and careful review. Although underwriters may not often work directly with producers, their guidance helps agents provide accurate, timely service to policyholders.
The work shifts with seasonal crop cycles and deadlines throughout the year. On any given day, underwriters may review applications, acreage reports, written agreements and uploaded documents; clear policy errors; and coordinate with agents and internal teams to keep policies moving forward.
Experience, judgment and collaboration
The day-to-day work of underwriting involves many moving parts, but the value underwriters bring goes beyond completing tasks and clearing errors.
Attention to detail is essential in underwriting, but so is sound judgment. Underwriters review handbooks, policy provisions, procedures and program rules to find the right answer. When guidance overlaps, they must understand which language takes precedence and how to apply it correctly.
That knowledge develops over time. It can take several crop cycles to become comfortable with the rules, systems and deadlines involved in crop insurance. Experienced underwriters help strengthen the team by guiding newer team members through complex questions and sharing their knowledge.
Underwriting also connects work in the office with activity in the field. Business development representatives meet directly with agents while underwriters provide the policy knowledge, system support and documentation guidance needed to address questions and resolve issues. That partnership helps reduce delays and create a better experience for agents and producers.
Underwriters take pride in the policies they support and the service they provide. The role requires patience, curiosity, communication and continued learning, along with a commitment to helping agents and internal teams move forward with confidence.
Recognizing the underwriting team
The underwriting team brings knowledge, service and dedication to AgriSompo each day. Their attention to detail, sound judgment and support for agents, producers and internal teams make a meaningful impact across the organization.
