A local focus and a global perspective

By Marji Guyler-Alaniz, Chief Operating Officer

Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to Japan to participate in Sompo's Next Leaders Program. Being in the country where Sompo was founded 138 years ago and where we are an important part of the fabric of society was a powerful reminder that AgriSompo is part of something much larger. While we often focus on our own teams, priorities and challenges, this unique experience reinforced the importance of stepping back and seeing the broader impact of our work.

I spent time with colleagues from across Europe, Asia, Japan and North America, learning from leaders with different experiences, cultures and perspectives. Despite our differences, one theme was consistent: we are united by a common purpose. Across the world, we help people recover from adversity, rebuild after loss and move forward with confidence.

For AgriSompo, that purpose is especially meaningful. Every day, our employees and agency partners come together to help ensure farmers can continue to grow food, ranchers raise livestock, businesses remain resilient and rural communities can carry on. When a drought, storm, or unexpected challenge occurs, the work we do helps farmers continue their operations and preserve the ability to farm for future generations.

The Next Leaders Program focused on growing as a leader, building strategy, developing emotional intelligence and understanding the important role we play in growing strong and resilient teams. One lesson stood out above the rest: growth happens when we seek new perspectives, learn from others and challenge ourselves to think differently.

Perhaps the greatest takeaway was realizing that while cultures and the ways we interact, work and learn across the world may be different, our values are remarkably similar. We care about people. We care about each other. We care about helping customers succeed. And we care about creating opportunities for those around us to learn, grow and achieve more than they thought possible.

A final thought

As I reflect on my time in Japan, I am reminded that none of us succeeds alone. We are part of a global organization with a rich history, tremendous strength and an exciting future. Whether you are an employee, an agent partner or a farmer customer, your contribution is meaningful here and around the world.

Together, we are part of something greater than ourselves. We work across cultures, geographies and businesses, but we are united by a shared purpose: helping people protect what matters, continue their legacies and build a better future. When we learn from each other, support each other and move forward together, there is no limit to what we can accomplish.

That is the power of Sompo. That is the opportunity before us. And that is something worth remembering every day.
