Mental health in rural America

By Brad Fink, Vice President of National Field Claims

AgriSompo serves rural communities every day, and at the heart of that commitment is a deep respect for the people who live and work there. Supporting these communities means more than providing risk management tools;, it also means understanding the real challenges they face and showing up with care, empathy, and purpose. Mental health is one of those challenges, particularly in rural areas where access to care can be limited and conversations around support do not always come easily.

Across many rural communities, care may be hours away, provider shortages can limit options and virtual resources are not always reliable. In closeknit towns, concerns about privacy can make it harder for people to reach out, even when they are struggling. These barriers affect our customers, our agents and often our own colleagues. When someone is under strain, the effects rarely stop at that individual: they ripple through families, workplaces and the broader community.

That is why mental health support cannot begin at the moment of crisis. It starts by normalizing difficult conversations, recognizing early signs of stress and making people feel safe in seeking support. When resources feel visible, approachable and easy to share, communities are better equipped to respond before challenges deepen and become overwhelming.

The resources being shared this week can be found here, and are intended to support our employees and agents as trusted partners in the communities we serve. They are designed to build understanding of the unique realities rural communities may face and to provide practical, confidencebuilding tools for responding with care. We have also included resources that can be shared with customers to help raise awareness and connect people to support.

At AgriSompo, supporting rural communities means paying attention to people: our employees, our agents and the customers who place their trust in us. When we take the time to understand the barriers people face and respond with compassion and practical support, we help strengthen not only individual wellbeing, but the resilience of rural communities for the long term.
